Although this methodology would be applicable and efficient on offsetting GHG emissions throughout most of the tropical countries, we have to consider some aspects that guide our effort towards a particularly chosen context. We have focused this proposal onto the small Brazilian farmers' nowadays reality. We are already working with communities from southern São Paulo's state. The methodology was developed to work with families that has being put aside from the economic growth and had rarely seeing any government support.
The actions of our present carbon offset project will be done at a place called Verava, which is a district that belongs to the town of Ibiuna, almost 80 kilometers distant from São Paulo city. The local community is basically formed by small farmers that grow lettuce and other vegetables. This area is part of the Atlantic rainforest ecosystem and still holds significant remains of what once covered 1.5 million km2 of Brazil.
Most of these families are going through a crisis and have to struggle really hard to keep alive in the present day's market economy. If nothing is done the majority of these people are sadly going to leave the agriculture activity and move their families to the suburban areas of São Paulo.
